Franz Schubert’s Winterreise is one of the best-known and most important cycles of lieder in the history of music. Their unique quality is reflected in the numerous adaptations and completely new interpretations made. At the end of 2021, two travellers between the worlds of pop and classical music embarked on an artistic tour of exploration of Schubert’s work: Oliver Welter, musician and singer with the cult band Naked Lunch, and pianist, and sound and performance artist Clara Frühstück. They do not aspire to achieve “ideal expression”, but rather to discover the essence of these lieder through a developed understanding of pop and the greatest possible passion: artistic appropriation, complete deconstruction and reinterpretation. The result is a journey beyond the borders of pop.
