BUXTEHUDE Membra Jesu nostri Gli Incogniti
Voces Suaves
Amandine Beyer
Dietrich Buxtehude composed the cantata cycle Membra Jesu nostri patientis sanctissima (Limbs Most Holy of Our Suffering Jesus) for the period of Lent in 1680.
In seven individual pieces, Buxtehude observes and lends allegorical interpretation to the feet (Ad pedes), knees (Ad genua), hands (Ad manus), side (Ad latus), chest (Ad pectus), heart (Ad cor) and face (Ad faciem) of the crucified Jesus. He largely avoids highly dramatic passages, preferring to mould the suffering of Jesus into deep inwardness, mild sorrow and soft, heartfelt music. Together with the Swiss singers of Voces Suaves, the Gli Incogniti ensemble under the direction of violinist Amandine Beyer invites the audience to experience this incredibly beautiful music.
